Kissing Cousins
Amazing sight at the DGA this evening. Tons of people packed the lobby and it felt like it was opening night one more time, but this time Sunday at 6:30pm, when then became 7pm and then maybe 7:20 by the time the film began. Kissing Cousins a film by Amyn Kaderali was the special feature film that's put in the middle. They call it a center piece film when it's not an opener or a closer to get that extra special showing in there. Did you know that? I've only recently learned about the centerpiece spot in a festival.
What did I think about the film? Honestly, it was a great first feature. Kaderali masterfully weaves a ton of characters to make a fun family comedy. I guess you can say romantic comedy featuring an Indian lead dude who's just a dude and not an Ethnic portrayal. It's funny, and he gets away with a lot of scenes that could have easily gone south. Impressive. I felt it wasn't lit right, might be my only criticism. Maybe it was the projection. Either way, it's worthy of support.
Kissing Cousins site. This has to be temporary since it's it's an ip address.
I ate one too many samosas beforehand, which were really good. I'm sure they were out there for Kaderali and his friends, but I munched as many as I could anyway. Having that festival badge helps.

Kaderali was still being interviewed. He's a tall dude picking his eye. The weird thing is, life's grand during the festivals, but if you don't have "big" (as in Hollywood) interest, it's a big up that crests at the festival and then turns back into regular life soon after. But I think the highs are fun for that minute.

Hi Eric,
thank you for reviewing Kissing Cousins, this is the editor writing... In defense to our talented DP I can tell you that the lighting issue you had was due to a very poor HD projector. We had 5 minutes technical run thru before the film was shown and found out that the projector could not go any brighter. Needless to say we were very disappointed, but the show must go on....
That's not a review, really. I could say a ton more. It's just a few sentences, but yes, it's well done. I did notice when he'd turn on the light to his loft, there was no change! I'd think it's a "timing" issue as well. I'm sure you can have it balanced a lot more to the rest of the film. If that was done perfect, this film is good to go.
Last night I went to see
a Korean film called "Happiness"
and while watching the
film the main actor
started to look familiar
to me. Then I realized
the actor's profile
reminded me of Martin's
except the actor has
a bigger forehead.

I don't know, maybe it's
just me, but anyways,
"Happiness" seemed to be
more about sadness or the
fact that you better
recognise happiness when
you have it because
it can be gone in a
flash. My friend thought
the story was predictable,
but I thought the setting
in Korea was interesting.
uhhh the film that you fels asleep in was not planet b-boy. please make correction.
hi eric,
this is johnny kwon, director of always be boyz. i'm not quite sure what you're getting at with your review of my movie, considering it hasn't even screened in los angeles yet. It doesn't screen until May 7th at the imaginasian center? You seem to be making certain comparisons with the documentary Planet B-boy. I'm not sure why you do it in the manner you do though. I do however know that always be boyz is a 100%grassroots production and the fact that i am responding to your post and not some publicist shows that.
sincerely,
johnny kwon

John, I deleted the crap it led to too much confusion, but it's hardly a review. If I wanted to review it, I'd give it more than a sentence that had no opinion whatsoever. Invite me to a screening and I'll check it out.
Actually the crowd shown in the pic was for the previous movie THE SENSEI. Sorry to hear that the HD projector was bad. They had the same problem with the projector on the previous movie
no... the crowd is a bit of both. The line behind was the tremendous one for Kissing Cousins. But yet, there were a bunch of VIPs for Kissing Cousins milling around waiting to get in without being in line. But it doesn't really matter now. I'm glad you commented though, since it's great to know that film people read the blog and they really are nit picky about the details, as I should be.
