"David Lynch"

David Lynch photo exhibition at Michael Kohn gallery. Got out to see this a bit. A lot of people were around, it was cool I think. The photos were mixed, decent, sometimes colorful and sometimes funny, sometimes mysterious. A little bit of narrative and context goes a long way. If you want to see these bigger, click on the image. I didn't shoot a lot of photos. Sometimes, shooting photos in a photo exhibition feels like you're doing something wrong. The funniest thing, is that in the middle photo, that's Dave Stone. I see him sometimes in my neighborhood. He's been in tons of bands and now he's doing push-ups in David Lynch's photos.

I also updated the flickr just a bit. flickr.

Giant Robot Biennale Step 1

That's Clement Hanami from JANM and Souther Salazar who's in the Giant Robot Biennale this year. We were there to case out the space and see how much to carve out for this man. But the Kogi truck happened to be there and Clement hooked us up. The guy behind Souther is wearing some North Carolina Tar Heels Jump Man shorts. I wonder if he can play.

We made Toyo Miyatake jokes for a sec. He had to sneak a lens into the camp so he could take a picture of a tree. That's what Souther said in his deadpan humor. Meanwhile, I wondered in what orifice did the lens fit into? Ok all bad jokes aside, the man is a master. Check out his recent documentary. Toyo's Camera

I saw this for the first time.

Happy Sheep

Some days, I feel like a Mongol. Throat singing, riding horses in the plains, capturing rival tribe members, traveling with the weather, herding horses, wrestling, and wearing dope hats. I have to eat too, so I hop down to Happy Sheep, where I can get the half not spicy, and half spicy hot pot. I get the lamb of course, the meat of choice when I need energy to do battle. I used to be strong and could handle the spice, but the ring of fire has struck me down and kept me from battle one too many times. I go with the mild. Happy Sheep.

Check out these villagers that I shall pillage. Each one has a wallet.

I need green sometimes to help the digestion. Shrimp balls help too.

Donutman and Seikoen

Jim Nakano from the Donutman. Yes, took another trip and ran into him in the parking lot with his strawberries. These are smaller in size, yet they're super sweet. Although Donutman strawberry donuts are always good, the first thing Jim said was, these are going to be better than last time, and they were. Catch Jim in the AM at the Donutman. He's the coolest guy. The staff loves GR.

Seikoen in Torrance... lovely raw liver. It's Korean food done in a Japanese setting. That round hole on the piece on the right is a bit freaky, but I ate it anyway. It's served with a salt, oil, garlic dipping sauce.

Tripe and tongue on the far plate. Heart and chicken on the nearer plate. These went on the BBQ. I'd suggest this place.

kozyndan x Puma

Whoa, kozyndan at Puma. Nice displays, nice gear, shirts, shoes, and more. I like how the folks there know who they are, just a bit, but are still finding out more. What a great gig for a great pair of artists. I suppose the artists doing products continues. I do like how the below image actually looks like you're looking out of a window onto a street in London rather than you looking into a Puma store.

I'm proud of kozyndan. From the early days of them coming to Giant Robot 1 as college students to giving them a show at GR1 (before GR2) then having them all over the place in assorted shows, and more, it's been a fun ride and it keeps on going.

That's Dan looking for a baguette.

Deformed Siamese Twin Cherries

When you get discount cherries at $1/lb, you have to expect some weirdness. Here are some examples. Extra growths aren't pretty, they don't taste good either, but the part that's full formed next to the deformed parts are pretty good. Fruit seconds work for me at 1/3 the price and since I'm an addict to cherries, I can eat pounds in a sitting.

From the GR dog adoption: a Cat + extra photo

That's Saelee, she's hardly a dog and no, I couldn't adopt her, although I tried. Perfect teeth without a doubt, good skin tone, nice personality... I'm actually talking about Kika, my cat.

The Mushroom Tree. I swear I had a dream that I saw three mushroom clouds (atomic bomb) that night.

Mr Joe Hahn... someone needs to put this guy in a movie.

Jurassic Technology visit

Laika. The best dog ever. Sadly, the dog died in space. Actually, though I've now heard that the dog never made it alive into space and died along the way from shock. Either way, the Russian space dogs were heroic, but at the same time, treated like shit. This can't happen today. If it did, Michael Vick would still be in the NFL with a big grin. This exhibition of paintings is at the Museum of Jurassic technology in Culver City.

Neat furniture that's there just to be there.

The 3d section.

I don't know about these... but I like how the photo came out. The exhibit is actually really cool, and I like the fact that the sound that comes out is of field recordings of the location. (perhaps).

Classroom at UCLA

We did a talk today at UCLA for a print studies class. It's a seminar type of class and it seems like a lot of fun. Their assignment was to interview us, and each person in the class has to do this. Some asked little questions, some went for it and did more. We gave a presentation, and then it was open season for questions that lasted over an hour. They just kept coming and were relentless with them but it was fun. I hope to see some of the results. Joyce Lee one of our readers is teaching this class and she handles the students like she handles her everyday life as far as I can tell.

Mr Hahn directs

Linkin Park Video shoot. Joe Hahn directs the new video. I heard the song a bunch of times. I purposely had to leave imagery out since it's secretive. Wives, families, and more attend the shoot. It's like a work vacation. That's how the big kids do it.

Shiro's Head brother's Muna

Shiro's Head. The brothers Don and Kel on the left and right of me at the film festival. The coolest thing about film festivals, is that when they bring people in from out of town, you can see their excitement and energy. Don and Kel are from Guam. It's not like it's their first time to the US, but they did make a film out of Guam, that's sort of like a Menace to Society. It's not a wimpy movie about dudes in grass skirts, this is street level stuff. Here's a trailer.

Weird ad for Kanye West's Mother's plastic surgeon?

Dr. Jan Adams... I think. I'm pretty sure this is him. He's Kanye West's mother's plastic surgeon. The full page ad does say Beverly Hills and it does say plastic surgeon... But why is he in this ad for Chanel? This ad is older then his more newsworthy times of late. This came out I believe in 2001 and it's in Studio Voice magazine from Japan! Check him out on TMZ. Do I have the right guy?

The Hipster Grifter

I totally missed this, but the hipster grifter, who became the Asian sensation for 1 minute, is in custody... There was something great about her being on the run. A movie? What's next for her? Gawker has the short story.

Food Show Pile up

I've been stockpiling some food photos, so I'm going to let a few loose. This is home made "nabe". It's been hot in Socal, so I'm not sure if this is the right call... but it tastes great. It's fairly easy and goes a long way. The key is to get the right ingredients. The chicken meat ball (tsukune) is the key. If you don't have something like that, you're doomed. This is the standard type, there's no curry, kimchee, or anything like that. Below you can see that I use magazines as the cushion and splash guard.

Flame on!

Tokyo 7-7 in Culver City. Simple breakfast that's so good.

This was a weird call. Kay and Dave's in Brentwood. These are lamb tacos.

Random leftover from the week.

Jessica Sanders. Had some ice-tea and found out that directors with films have something like 20TBs worth of external hard drives. She told me about her latest film projects, and they all sound good. Feature narratives here she comes.

The ahi sandwich at The Library Ale House.

This is myself being interviewed by Daniel Wu for the CAPE event. Drawing by James Jean. Notice he even drew by sparkling water bottle.

See the T-shirt the kid is wearing. Super 7, probably bought at Giant Robot.

Painting by Joe Hahn and Jeff McMillan. It's Smurfs doing nasty things to each other.

David Horvath's Turtle! Thanks David for the nice gift.

UNDFTD - Converse Poorman's Weapon

These are nice. Military-esque, grey, removable patches like a real bomber jacket. The stitching, the laces, the inside Agent Orange, orange. The real jacket patch is a nice tough. Branding that you can't miss, all in a shoe that's under $100 retail. Converse are never that expensive, so all this falls in line. Thanks Converse for sending a pair. I'll rock these for sure.

Velcro, the forgotten favorite.

Using that military font...

Consistently orange.

One day, we'll get to make a shoe that I could wear daily. I like the back. The fabric with the pattern is nice.

George Takei speaks at Imagined Futures May 2, 2009

Yes, I spoke right after, but George Takei is bad ass. He mentioned that giving hugs can lead to swine flu, but I hugged him anyway. His talk goes across the map and he mentioned Gene Roddenberry and even plugs the new Star Trek. If I could be as cool as George, then I'll be lucky. The conference seemed like it was aimed at the future artists of Asian America... well, that means America. My part of the talk, was basically to show what we've done, how pop culture counts, and how being part of the rest of the world matters. Photo by Thomas Nakanishi
