I find out through the grapevine that we and our neighbors are the only ones who didn't give our UPS driver a christmas gift. What are the right protocals for this under these conditions?
1) I'm not Christian although I might give others some "christmas gifts" usually for my family and such.
2) Our driver isn't that great. We once had a great driver who I'd give a "bonus" to at the end of the year. The one we have isn't him.
3) Our ups driver made it a point to tell one of our employees about his lack of gift which makes it seem like he feels he's entitled to it
4) he didn't give one to us - yes, what do you think about that? He's getting paid to do his job. We're paying for him services, so... where's our gift?
5) he can actually be a jerk at times and has been to our manager.
To his defense, he does his job. He delivers us the packages, and picks up the ones we have for him - which is becoming less and less as we start to move on to using more of the crappy government services. What's the right thing?

Don't get him a gift. Maybe a verbal greeting here or there, but No Gift!
i think it can't hurt to give him a present. maybe you could make it sort of jerky, though. instead of something super cool, get him a ubiquitous starbucks card. for $5!
my dad is a mail carrier and people have always given him gifts. they range from nice tins of mixed nuts, to envelopes of money to large baskets of muffins/cookies.
it also helps if the person is nice. my dad is friendly with the people on his route. he'll stop and chat, joke with the kids and will even go out of his way to do small things like bring the trash cans up for some of the older residents or give doggy treats to the pets on his route.
if your ups driver is a dick and expects a gift, then he doesn't deserve one.

I would give him him some recognition, some gift.. what have you. Oh maybe give him a gift you got for xmas that you don't want- tube socks? His incentive to do a good job may go down if you don't, his attitude is pretty childish though. anyways happy christmas

So far haven't given him anything. Martin left out a consolation prize tiny tiny bag of cookies, like microsize. It made me laugh, but he's not worth that either. He was rude today, and now we have a phone call in to his supervisor. Ideally it would be nice to not see his face again.
If you want to get technical they are not allowed to receive gifts from customers. Gratuity is a big NO NO. I did how ever give my UPS driver a Christmas card. She gave me a UPS calendar.=o) Cards are always safe gifts are not necessary.
